Quality clay solutions – the companies of Stephan Schmidt Group are among the leading producers of special clays and industrial minerals in the world. The wide range of products comprises white- and light-firing clays and red-firing clays, shaly clays, special clays for engobes and glazes, binding clays and granulated clays. The single clays extracted from 20 company-owned opencast mining pits in Germany are homogenized and refined in the group’s modern preparation and grinding plants. All companies belonging to Stephan Schmidt Group are certified in accordance with ISO 9001:2008, and additionally Stephan Schmidt KG is certified according to EMAS, thus guaranteeing production at the highest level of quality consistency. Enormous reserves in the group’s clay deposits assure the continuous supply of customers for many generations.

For the production of roofing tiles, the Stephan Schmidt Group offers a comprehensive range of standardized clays to meet all kinds of customer requirements, which are grouped under the brand name Roof Line. The main focus in this field are plastic red-firing clays to improve shaping characteristics and increase green strength. Shaly clays to improve moisture conductivity and outgassing and red-firing special clays to optimize firing colours complete the wide range of raw materials. For the production of accessories, Stephan Schmidt Group also offers complete ceramic bodies for all types of production processes.

The subsidiary Müllenbach & Thewald GmbH, a member of Stephan Schmidt Group, specializing in clays for engobes and glazes, supplies the ceramic building products industry mainly with roof tile engobes from the Glaze Line product range. These special clays boast good workability, high opacity and consistent quality.

From some of its special clay deposits, Stephan Schmidt Group also extracts easily reducing raw material components for the production of clinker and facing bricks, which are marketed under the brand name Brick Line. With the selective use of these clays, customers are able to achieve the desired firing colour according to the respective firing conditions and improve the reduction acceptance of their own raw materials. The Brick Line product range also comprises clays for improving the fire resistance of clinker and clay pavers.

In addition to these special applications for the clay brick and tile industry, raw materials from Stephan Schmidt Group are employed in all branches of the ceramic industries as well as in special applications in the field of mineral products.
