Shrinkage measurement in real time supports ChoriTherm drying

In Zi Brick and Tile Industry International 1-2/2008 Novokeram’s new “ChoriTherm” drying process is described, which was presented for the first time at the Würzburg Brick and Tile Training Course in 2007. Now, around one year later, the experience gained in practical trials was presented at the 2008 course. According to this, approx. 60% of all brick and roofing tile formats can be dried in 48 hours to a residual moisture level of 5%, without consuming thermal energy from fossil fuels.

1 Introduction

Since a ChoriTherm dryer needs no thermal energy, the waste heat from the tunnel kiln must be regarded as discard, which makes the manufacture of ceramic products more expensive. At the Würzburg Brick and Tile Training Course in 2008 Novokeram presented alternative utilization possibilities for the waste heat from the tunnel kiln, for after all not every brickmaker can invest in a new kiln.

The ChoriTherm drying process is characterized by the fact that during the shrinkage of the green products in the dryer an exact regulation of moisture is carried out – regardless of the...
