Ceratec commissions a fully automatic production line for accessories at Meyer-Holsen

The clay roofing tile manufacturer Meyer-Holsen has a long tradition of over 150 years in making premium-quality roofing tiles. The company stands for sustainability and quality.

Ceratec was contracted by Meyer-Holsen to supply a new automatic production line for tile accessories at its production facility in Rahden. Selected facts and figures on this project:

Meyer-Holsen makes more than 600 different clay roofing tiles

More than 66 accessories need to be handled

Eight different H-setters are used in the production process

There are three different dryer trays

Over 2 mill. accessories are produced annually

The project was realized in compliance with the following guiding principles:

Flexibility, that means the production of small batches, therefore demanding short changeover times

Reduction in manpower: this meant a very high level of automation in order to cope with the maximum speed of 15 tiles per minute for the accessories. For some products, the installation is even running at a maximum capacity of 20 tiles/min.

Quality: this is achieved by means of very homogeneous drying in the newly built dryer chambers as well as with a state-of-the-art engobing/glazing line with independent supports and different 2D and 3D vision systems in order to avoid chipping during the handling of the dried products

Energy efficiency: this was obtained by using the right drying curve for each different product monitored with the Ceraview dryer software and homogeneous drying in each chamber

Monitoring, planning and traceability tools were created and provided by Ceratec

The complete installation was delivered by Ceratec as a turnkey-project, i.e. from the layout, through engineering, assembly, integration of the strapping machines and the engobing line, to communication with existing equipment, all safety measures, the set-up, the electronic control system, the supervision systems and the start-up. This project therefore represents a reference project for the entire heavy clay ceramics industry. The key to the successful realization of this project was the trust Meyer-Holsen placed in Ceratec and the concerted efforts of customer and supplier.
