European Silicoat research project concluded
with positive laboratory trials

This article reports on the findings of the recently concluded European research project Silicoat. With a coating of the silica particles in the production process, the hazardous risk of this material was to be reduced and the employees in ceramic production protected accordingly. The transfer of the first positive laboratory findings to production has proven difficult; here follow-on research projects are necessary.

1 Introduction

The project set to run over three years was supported with around € 1 mill. within the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission. The consortium comprised 11 partners, three research institutes in the ceramics industry from Italy, Spain and Germany and four SMEs also from Italy, Spain and Germany. Four ceramic industry associations from Spain, Portugal and Germany also took part. These contributed their experience with respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and are to make sure that the findings obtained are made available to all interested ceramics manufacturers.
