Âït-Benhaddou

This collection of old village buildings with its earthen walls is regarded as one of the most beautiful in Morocco. The fortress-like dwellings nested within each other and built closely together climb up the mountain.

Despite decorative ornaments, the fortified village with its defence towers and walls looks more like a stronghold. The individual houses are built around courtyards and have almost no windows facing the outside. A world heritage site since 1987, Âït-Benhaddou has often been used as a location for shooting big movies. Today mainly tourists can be found wandering through the almost completely abandoned village, which is in urgent need of conservation.
