Assessing ceram-technological properties from the raw material mineralogy

On the basis of a pool of data amassed over several years, possibilities are explained for deriving information regarding the ceram-technological properties of raw materials from material analyses. In this paper only building ceramics are discussed.

1 Introduction

With the help of statistical processes, a selection of data was analysed, and input and output parameters correlated. For this purpose, it was necessary to establish relevant input and output data. The input was limited to the mineralogical composition. For the output, the drying shrinkage and bending strength and, determined at firing temperature stages, the firing shrinkage, bending strength, water absorption and density were measured.
