Ziegelwerk Nordhausen Dipl.-Ing. Sourell GmbH, Nordhausen, Germany

Finding its place in a niche

Following reprivatization of the brickworks in 1990, Ziegelwerk Nordhausen has developed from an “industrial monument worth preserving” to a modern production base. The 16 employees produce around 40 mill. NF standard-size clay bricks per year – and clay bricks in up to 80 different formats. Specializing in speciality products, which are also supplied to other brickworks, the company is asserting its position on the market.

Today, Dipl.-Ing. Thomas Sourell, Managing Partner, has to smirk when he remembers how following German Reunification a trade journal described his plant as an “industrial monument worth preserving”. This was, he revealed, a great incentive to steadily invest in the operations and make the plant market-viable. But the GDR legacy did not make it easy – antiquated technology, regulations from heritage conservation and various other authorities demanded and continue to demand total commitment from Thomas Sourell.
