Influence of the ceramic-related properties on the adhesive bond between brick slips and substructure material

The application of clay brick slips on façade surfaces is to be facilitated with a simplified specification.

Basis for this are research findings with brick slips mortared directly onto rendered or unrendered masonry and brick slips mortared or adhesively bonded in a thermal insulation composite system. Currently existing limiting conditions are to be verified for the possible applications of brick slips. These include, for example, water absorption and the pore structure (pore size distribution) of the adhesive underside of the ceramic body. Current findings are correlated with each other. Primarily the adhesive bond between the brick slip with its characteristic properties and the specific sub-structure. The influence of the external conditions of the systems in service is explored, e.g. freeze-thaw cycling. For the specific system, the adhesive strengths after different storage conditions are determined. These adhesive strengths are correlated with the specific type of failure for assessment of the bond.
