New structures for former brewery quarter

Brick house alongside brick house – the historical buildings in the Carlsberg quarter in Valby, part of Copenhagen, stand like a testament to the old days. Many of the buildings once belonged to a large complex, the Carlsberg Brewery. After mass production was shut down here in 2008 and relocated, it was time to redesign the quarter. In the scope of the restructuring project, a central square was redesigned by the landscape architect’s office 1:1 Landskab based in Copenhagen – a new train station with forecourt was added. This forecourt is adorned with clay pavers.

For the safety of all those using the forecourt, the areas for cyclists and pedestrians have been demarcated and zoned with differently coloured pavers. For realization of the project, the architects used three different pavers. The various zones were not only separated from each other by colour, different laying patterns ensure clear partitioning of the zones. A reddish-brown-grey colour marks out the zones for cyclists. The sandy yellow Odense pavers are reserved for the pedestrians. The dark, anthracite-coloured Atlanta pavers are used as a visible element indicating the separation of the two traffic zones. All three grades harmonize perfectly with each other thanks to their coal firing accents and flaming and give the new square a modern and at the same time traditional look.
