Goerg & Schneider buys “Stoss” deposit and mining operations
Goerg & Schneider GmbH u. Co. KG, the clay mining company based in Siershahn/Westerwald, has acquired the “Stoss” deposit and mining operations in Haiger-Langenaubach (in the north-east of the Westerwald region) from Theodor Stephan KG GmbH & Co.KG, with effect from 1 March 2008.
The well-known plastic, white-fi ring Stoss clay with its high dry modulus of rupture has been mined for 140 years. Originally used for the manufacture of refractory bricks and facing bricks, over the last few decades its application has shifted mainly to ceramic sanitaryware,
wall and fl oor tiles as well as building ceramics. Up to the end of the 1960s the Stoss clay was mined underground. Then for economic reasons, the switch was made to open-cast mining and a modern blending and homogenization plant was built and extended; the equipment at this plant remains state of the art to this day.
Over wide areas of the deposit, the high-quartz to plastic clays are covered by boulder quartzite (over 98% SiO2), which is also extracted and used in the refractories industry.
With these outstanding and exceptional raw materials, the supply of which can be guaranteed, in connection with the directly adjacent G&S “Aulis” approved mining site, over the next decades, Goerg & Schneider is expanding its range for supply to the ceramics industry.
