News on standardization

The standardization of and for products of the brick and tile industry is a continuous process in which the members of the national association are involved intensively. The goal is either to standardize own (positive) insights and findings from day-to-day practice or research activities or to avert impending tightenings. Due to the heterogeneous composition of the respective standardization committees, including scientists, users, construction supervision authorities and, last but not least, competitors, it is no wonder that the standardization process is frequently attended by intensive discussions. Since standardization per se is moving increasingly “toward Europe”, it is also becoming increasingly necessary to consider the interests of other nations. What can happen when Europe‘s “rules of the game” are not abided by is exemplified by the still not fully estimable ramifications of the EUCJ decision of 16 October 2014, which will require a substantial volume of short-term standardization activities.

The contribution provides a brief overview of basic contexts, perspectives and standardization projects of relevance to the brick and tile industry.
