One of the biggest: Händle‘s optimized WMH 818a roller crusher

With a maximum volumetric throughput of some 250 m³/h and a maximum feed size of roughly 1 000 mm, the hydraulically powered WMH 818a roller crusher is one of the biggest on the market for the precomminution of hard, cloddy raw materials for ceramics. This hydraulic crusher’s topicality is underscored by the fact that a number of them have been delivered just recently. Indeed, the engineering of this large and powerful crusher dating from the year 2000 exemplifies a sea change in the philosophy of brickyardmachinery design and development. Until well into the One of the biggest: Händle‘s optimized WMH 818a roller crusher 1990s, product innovation was the name of the game. Products were being completely done over and redesigned at innovation-cycle intervals of 3 to 5 years. Now, though, much more importance is being attached to product variation via refinement and efficiency enhancement – much in tune with the old Japanese philosophy of Kaizen. Product variation is understood as a substantial change in product design, and product refinement is a term used to denote steady improvement in the design details of existing products. The modifications and improvements affect and concern everything a machine is expected to be: appropriate and adequate in function, application, stress exposure, wear & tear, maintenance, work safety and – last, but not least – costs. With costs steadily increasing, it is particularly important for that last requirement – as an essential element of product variation and refinement – to be met without detriment to any of the other. That, then, was the reasoning behind this latest product variation, which consisted of replacing the old hydraulic power pack, which had two separate, electric-motor-driven pumps, with a new one featuring a so-called tandem pump and a single electric motor. One of the main advantages of hydraulic crushers is their reversibility, so that hard inclusions can be repositioned for better reapplication of the crushing force. All crucial parameters, e.g., reversing time, rotational speed of the knife roller assembly, torque, etc., are extensively variable and adjustable to fit the respective feedstock.
