Optimization of roofing tile models

The options available to Frank Banke GmbH for reworking and optimizing roofing tile models were described in [1]. From the digital scanning of existing models, through basic revision in CAD, and on to the direct, high-precision implementation of new master models and new moulds, Banke does it all. The present contribution describes the basic aims of reworking for existing tiles and the various means of design-phase verification. The described methods and expedients were presented at the 2009 Würzburg Brick and Tile Training Course.

1 When do existing models need reworking?

When a new roofing tile model is being developed, it goes without saying that there are certain aspects to be considered. A sophisticated, attractive design is very important, of course. The on-roof optical effect can be just as decisive as the “tactile” effect of a hand-held model. To meet the requirements of current standards regarding resistance to wind and water penetration, the roofing tile must have neat and distinct, durable interlocks and overlaps. It must install well, perhaps be compatible with existing prior-model tiles, and have the...
