Modern single-family homes made of bricks

Nearly 30 building projects are united in the book „Moderne Einfamilienhäuser aus Backstein“. United in their differences: A bungalow in a clear design language of a Mies van der Rohe in the middle of Berlin‘s green surroundings and a neo-expressionistic villa situated deep in Belgium‘s province – the Potsdam single-family home and the estate in De Pinte in Flanders could not come along more contrasting – one ought to think. Nevertheless, both have two different things in common: Their architects intended to create houses of an exceptional quality. And they did so with the building material brick. Along with other houses from Sweden to Sri Lanka, from Ennigerloh in Westphalia to Barcelona, the two projects are gathered in the new book „Moderne Einfamilienhäuser aus Backstein“.

Living in brick buildings is nothing exclusive, and certainly nothing new. On the contrary, people have already been building their homes with bricks for thousands of years. This often leads to rock-solid everyday architecture. In many cases it seem rather unsensational. Bricks are a rather calm building material, as the famous architect Prof. Hans Kollhoff once expressed it.

With its very impressive projects, this book proves that this traditional material not only allows a daring, forwardlooking architecture of single-family homes, but literally challenges architects and building owners to do so. Because the designs presented in this book are everything, but one thing quite certainly not: dull. They are modern in the very best sense, and they are functional. They combine high quality of living with aesthetics. Most of them are submissions for the renowned Fritz Höger Award for Brick Architecture.

Whoever is considering building his own, totally individual house, will get a source of inspiration with this book full of valuable architectural ideas. Building owners as well as architects will learn what is possible. With the old, forever young building material brick.
