Using alternative fuels in a Moroccan brickworks in a CDM project

An ongoing “Clean Development Mechanism” (CDM) project in Morocco is presented; this project is being realized at the brickworks Societé Briqueterie Bati Chouia S.A. (SBBC), around 30 km south of Casablanca. Goal of the project is to improve the company’s ­sustainability and profitability and enable investment in new technologies.

1 Introduction

In the scope of the Kyoto Protocol [1], the industrial nations were given the option to realize “Clean Development Mechanism” (CDM) projects in the developing and threshold countries cited in Annex B of the Kyoto Protocol, in order to achieve their contractually agreed emission reduction goals. For these countries, no emission reduction goals are agreed, although they have signed the Kyoto Protocol. The reduction is undertaken on a voluntary basis.
