January to September 2012

6.2% more housing units approved in Germany

From January to September 2012, the building of 178 100 housing units was approved in Germany. That was 6.2% or 10 400 more housing unit approvals than in the first nine months of 2011. This means a continuation of the positive trend in housing construction approvals that emerged in 2010.

In terms of housing units, from January to September 2012 a total of 156 600 apartment newbuilds was approved, that was 6.3% more than in the prior-year period. There was a particularly strong increase in the approvals for housing units in apartment buildings (+14.0%). In semi-detached houses, 4.9% more housing units were approved. Approvals of detached houses, however, declined slightly (‑2.6%).

From January to September 2012, enclosed space for approved new non-residential buildings was up 7.3% on the prior-year period, rising to 159.7 mill. m³. This development could be solely attributed to the increase in approvals for non-public building owners, which rose by 8.8% to 148.4 mill. m³. For public building owners, on the other hand, the approved building volume for non-residential buildings fell by 9.1% to 11.3 mill. m³.
