The Erich Mendelsohn Prize for Brick Architecture is entering its next round. 17.09.2025In view of the current challenges facing the construction industry, brick offers valuable properties in terms of sustainability, aesthetics, and stable value, which will continue to be of great importance in the future. The continuation of the Erich Mendelsohn Prize for Brick Architecture in 2026 underscores the importance of outstanding architecture and innovative construction projects, especially in times of change. “The fact that the Erich Mendelsohn Prize for Brick Architecture will be awarded again in 2026 sends a strong signal to the industry and is a clear commitment to building culture,” emphasizes Ernst Buchow, chairman of the initiative. First held in 2008 under the name Fritz Höger Prize for Brick Architecture, the competition takes place every three years and has been supported in partnership by the Association of German Architects (BDA) since 2011. Since 2022, it has been dedicated to Erich Mendelsohn. An independent jury awards this internationally renowned architecture prize to visionary projects worldwide, recognizing the craftsmanship expressed in forward-looking buildings.
Special support for young talent
A Newcomer Award has been presented since 2017 in cooperation with the BDA and will be sponsored by the architecture magazine DETAIL in 2026. The special prize is aimed at students and young architects who want to make a name for themselves in the industry with their work, whether it be designs or completed projects. Among the winners is the last gold winner, andjurekbrüggen from Berlin, whose Luise 19E project impressed the jury and journalists alike. Participation remains free of charge for newcomers.
Strengthening the award
Over the past 15 years, the international significance of the Erich Mendelsohn Award has grown considerably, proving time and again that brick is a material that, thanks to its tradition and durability, is capable of telling stories worldwide – while at the same time meeting the challenges of the future. The award is financially supported by medium-sized manufacturers who are actively involved in shaping architecture. Especially in times of economic tension on the German market, the manufacturers Bockhorner Klinkerziegelei, Deppe Backstein-Keramik, Gillrath Ziegel- und Klinkerwerk, Hagemeister Klinkerwerk, Klinkerwerk Iking, Janinhoff Klinkermanufaktur, Olfry Ziegelwerke, Petersen Tegl, Randers Tegl, and Wittmunder Klinker are committed to making the award even more attractive.
