The brick and tile industry in India – Current situation and development options
The Republic of India has one of the world‘s most strongly expanding economies. Presumably, India will also be the most populous country on earth by mid-century. India‘s brick and tile industry has a long tradition, but most domestic heavy clay products are still being made by hand there. Now, though, strong growth in the construction industry is necessitating structural change in the country‘s brick and tile industry in order to stay competitive with other building materials. This report surveys the present situation and the available options and opportunities for development.
1 Introduction
On December 11 and 12, 2009, Trivandrum, Kerala, India, hosted the “National Seminar on Recent Advances in Traditional Ceramics” and the “73rd Annual Session of the Indian Ceramic Society”. In India, traditional ceramics include everything from tableware and insulators to ceramic tiles, bricks, roof tiles and terracotta products.
