International and innovative as never before

Shortlist of the Erich Mendelsohn Prize 2023 for Brick Architecture published

The jury of the Erich Mendelsohn Prize 2023 for Brick Architecture has made its decision: 76 architectural offices and projects from a total of 584 submissions were shortlisted by the jurors.

"The submissions came from all over the world: from Europe, from China, from South America and above all - perhaps also thanks to the award winner two years ago - from Mexico. The innovative claim associated with the name Mendelsohn was confirmed throughout in the winning projects," reflects Bauwelt editor and jury member Ulrich Brinkmann on the jury session against the background that the Brick Architecture Award is dedicated to Erich Mendelsohn for the first time. "I have often thought of Mendelsohn today: of his life in Germany, in Palestine, in England and in the USA. He worked on different continents and in different cultural contexts."

In addition to the name, this year's prize jury was marked by a second novelty: for the first time, the panel had a strong international line-up with the appointment of the two 2020 Grand Prix winners. Fabrizio Barozzi (Barozzi Veiga) travelled from Barcelona and Andrés Solíz (Escobedo Soliz) from Mexico. Barozzi explicitly highlights the internationalisation of the award as a success: "The different points of view resulting from the different geographical origins of the jury members enriched the exchange. The discussions were very thoughtful and considered."

In addition to Brinkmann, Barozzi and Solíz, Susanne Wartzeck (President of the Association of German Architects BDA) and Silvia Schellenberg-Thaut (Atelier ST) were appointed to the five-member jury. At the end of June, the international panel met in Berlin and intensively discussed and evaluated the projects in the four categories: residential/storey housing, office and commercial buildings, public buildings, leisure and sports, and single-family house/detached house. A total of 584 submissions from 33 countries reached the Erich Mendelsohn Prize 2023 for Brick Architecture. 76 of them are on the shortlist. The names of the winning offices and projects in the four main categories and the special category of refurbishment will be announced at the official award ceremony on 8 September in Berlin.
