Greetings from associations and societies

On behalf of the Federal Association of the German Brick and Tile Industry, I would like to congratulate „Ziegelindustrie International“ on its 75th anniversary. Since the first issue, which at that time was still published under the title „Die Ziegel
industrie“ (The Brick and Tile Industry) in November 1948, many challenges have had to be overcome in every respect. The publishing and media industry, like the construction industry, is subject to constant change, has to be adaptable and flexible, and at the same time reach as wide a circle of addressees as possible. But these challenges are only one side of the coin. After 75 years of editorial and conceptual work, it must be acknowledged without envy: the enthusiasm for the natural product brick is unbroken. We are the market leader in residential construction and, even after 125 years of association work in Germany and internationally, we still manage to convince builders with our products. Our building material succeeds in combining sustainability and the creation of affordable housing. Thanks to the regular publication of technical articles, interviews, market overviews and company news, we are now very well positioned and networked throughout Europe and internationally. The articles and contributions of ZI play a large part in the successful professional exchange with our European friends from Tiles and Bricks Europe, the other building materials associations and, last but not least, with decision-makers at the European level.

We therefore want to deepen this partnership even further and get the best out of it for our industry. In doing so, the Federal Association, together with ZI, is facing the challenges of our time: digitalisation, which is changing all areas of life, climate change and the requirements for sustainable construction, the new threats to free world trade and the shortage of skilled workers, which is particularly noticeable in Germany. We are certain and also confident: the innovative strength and entrepreneurial spirit of our members will also navigate the brick and tile industry through the current and even more stormy times ahead. In this spirit, I wish us all the best for the future together.

Attila Gerhäuser, Chief Executive BVZi

On behalf of the Tiles and Bricks Europe (TBE), we would like to congratulate the Brick and Tile Industry International on its 75th anniversary and join you in the celebration! In fact the TBE itself has just celebrated last year its 70th anniversary last year and so it seems we are nearly peers.

The Brick and Tile Industry International has always been an important platform to exchange views and ideas crucial to the industry and often paved a way to discovery of the future solutions, for example technological, for our industry. It gathered our bricks and tiles community around key topics during all those years. Currently, Europe‘s manufacturing sectors are facing several challenges in the framework of the energy crisis and the climate transition: EU instruments are often weak to consider the importance of these industries, whose competitiveness is a key factor to achieve a successful energy transition and is essential to create long-term sustainable growth in the EU. Facing these common challenges, we hope to continue the pathway together with your magazine.

We wish the Brick and Tile Industry International much success for the future and look forward to maintaining good cooperation and promoting the value of the bricks and roof tiles industry in Europe.

Murray Rattana-Ngam, TBE President Mirosław Jaroszewicz, TBE Vice-President

Happy birthday to you!

The European Ceramic Technology Suppliers - ECTS are glad to congratulate to the 75th anniversary of ZI. As suppliers of the heavy clay sector, we need a strong and reliable industry network. ZI has been for decades an important and successful platform for our industry. Both relevant company news, information regarding upcoming events and technological advance, the ZI magazine always has been a serious source for information and contacts. In the case of our association, ZI is always a strong platform to spread information about our activities. Especially when it comes to our international technology symposia. After India, several Latin American and Asian countries, this year in November ECTS will hold a symposium in the Northern Iraqi city of Erbil. Encounters with local brick makers and plant visits will be offered. We are looking forward to cooperating in this again with ZI. All the best to the whole team and looking forward to a fruitful further cooperation!

Felip Verdés, ECTS Chairman

Dear readers

dear employees of Bauverlag,

Dear brickmakers,

the Research Association of the Brick and Tile Industry (FGZ) would like to congratulate the Bauverlag team on the 75th anniversary of the journal Brick and Tile Industry International (ZI). We would also like to thank the Bauverlag, which has accompanied our industry for 75 years.

A newspaper like ZI performs various tasks. I would like to focus on the important areas of process engineering: extrusion, drying and brick firing.

Who still knows them? Red like a brick, handy like a brick and meaningful like brick architecture. The legendary ZI Yearbook! In 1951, three years after the first publication of the magazine, the first brick yearbook was published. Tables and diagrams provided information on the coal requirements of a ring kiln, for example.

The red pocketbook remained faithful to the brickmakers in the 1960s and documented the change of epoch: from ring kiln to tunnel kiln. In the 70s, the Bauverlag supported with sharp photographs and exact diagrams the important work of Dr.-Ing. C. O. Pels Leusden on the screw press. The dissertation by Dr.-Ing. F.R. Stupperich on the dimensioning of drying chambers is also of very high quality, both in terms of content and graphics. With the 1987/88 edition of the yearbook, Bauverlag changed the compact format to the convenient A4 format. Now it was easier to prepare research reports for the brick industry. Dr Karsten Junge was able to publish his fundamental research work on the dimensioning of tunnel kilns in the new format.

In 2009, the last, technical red book was published. This marked the end of the publication of major research work in the brick and tile industry. Since then, Brick and Tile Industry International has regularly provided information on current research projects in the form of short and research reports.

For 75 years „our brickmaker magazine“ has been and still is a mediator between the scientists and the brickmakers. The Research Association of the Brick and Tile Industry would like to thank all those involved for their work.

Best regards

Rainer Berentelg
Chairman of the Brick and Tile Industry Research Association
