Measures from the Roadmap 2050 using the example of a backing brick compound

The brick industry’s ‘Roadmap 2050’ describes the path to greenhouse gas-neutral brick production by 2050. Important measures include switching to hydrogen or electricity-powered kilns, using carbonate-free raw materials and employing biogenic porosity agents. Alternative firing processes have already been successfully tested or are in use. Although the use of carbonate-free raw materials is possible without any problems, the higher the substitution rate, the greater the cost factor. The potential of this measure is therefore limited. The remaining process-related CO2 emissions cannot be offset by recarbonisation. One option would be to drastically reduce the firing temperature. Biogenic porosity agents (sawdust/biochar) are CO2-neutral and can cover a wide temperature range. Although this reduces the energy required for firing, increasing the content makes it more difficult to control the kiln, as a lot of energy may be released in a short period of time.
