Annual Meeting for clay brick and roofing tile manufacturers 2019 in Berlin

Following a good year for our industry in 2018, we are expecting a positive demand for clay bricks and roofing tiles in 2019, too, even though the growth momentum will probably slowly weaken. The Federal German government is therefore rightly planning specific investment in housing construction. Besides the construction of new buildings, the refurbishment of existing building stock is a core market for our industry. Significant incentives, for example for building refurbishment to improve energy efficiency, must now come at last.

Just as important for us is a competitive framework in raw materials, energy and environmental policy to sustainably secure our industrial production in Germany. With the renunciation of nuclear energy and the planned withdrawal from coal-fired power generation by the year 2038, around 50% of our power will have to be generated from other sources. Even with all constructive approaches: How is that supposed to work and who is going to pay for it?

Another example of misguided regulatory measures is shown currently by the planning of government of the German state of Baden-Württemberg to pursue a campaign promoting timber construction. Where possible, public construction projects are in future to be erected in timber or hybrid timber construction. As the clay brick and tile industry, we need to make a stand against unbalanced intervention in competition in favour of individual construction materials or construction methods. In our view, it is the market that has to decide how and with what materials a building should be erected. To this end we shall remain active and work through all political channels.

At this year’s Annual Meeting for the clay brick and tile industry, we have to discuss this and much more. From 22 to 24 May 2019, the who is who in the industry is meeting in Berlin. Ten industry organizations have issued invitations to their general meetings. Besides the debate on content, the programme promises many other appealing events, fascinating architectural tours and a gala evening in the media quarter of the trendy Friedrichshain district.

In the name of all the brick and roofing tile organizations, I look forward to seeing you all again in Berlin!

Dr. Matthias Frederichs
General Secretary Federal German Association of the Brick and Tile Industry Regd
