Current clay potential in Germany
Part 6: Raw materials from the Jurassic system
Low-carbon Lias and Dogger clays are the prime-choice clays for the Northwest German clay brick and roofing tile plants. But the much sought-after weathered horizons are difficult to find and becoming increasingly scarce. Bituminous clay beds, on the other hand, exist in large thicknesses. Pyrophyllite slate from the Malm (Upper Jurassic) formed in a contact metamorphic process are regarded as a rarity across Europe and optimize firing behaviour.
1 Global geology and tectonics
After the Triassic, the Jurassic represents the second system in the Mesozoic. The Jurassic is covered by strata of the Cretaceous, which is the youngest system in the Mesozoic. The Jurassic began around 199.3 mill. years ago, and ended around 145.0 mill. years ago. Following the terrestrial-dominated sediments of the Germanic Triassic, the Jurassic is characterized especially by shelf sea sediments. At the beginning of the Jurassic, a shallow epicontinental sea with deposited archipelagos developed. Towards the end of the Jurassic, the sea withdrew back to the...
