The paper presents a brief overview of the development of European product and design standards for clay masonry bricks, starting with the Construction Products Directive of 1988 to the introduction of the Eurocodes for masonry construction in 2014. The long and sometimes rather rocky road starting from the German standards DIN 105 and DIN 1053 up to the European standards DIN EN 771-1 and DIN EN 1996 (Eurocode 6) is discussed from the point of view of the clay brick industry.
