Open-air facility in the Melch Valley (CH) for long-term testing of clay roofing tiles

The freeze-thaw durability of clay roofing tiles is a key quality factor in climatic regions in which roofing tiles are exposed to the effects of frost. In the Melch Valley, Switzerland, open-air tests on clay roofing tiles have therefore been conducted at an altitude of around 1 000 m for almost 60 years now. Two facilities are available for the in situ measurements in the Melch ­Valley:

Large areas

On the test roofs, areas are covered with between 500 and 3 000 tiles per roofing tile type. The roofs are checked each summer. Any damage is inspected, recorded and documented with photos. Each...
