1 Geological background and site
At the Henneberg quarry near Heberndorf, Thuringia, Lower Carboniferous granite is extracted and processed to obtain such high-quality building materials as high-grade stone chips, track ballast and mineral aggregate. The rock is excavated by means of borehole blasting followed by several rounds of crushing and sizing. The by-products include precipitation filler and crusher dust rich in feldspar with particle sizes < 2 mm.
