Roofs – Storm-safe according to EN 14437 and resistant to wind-driven rain on the basis of prEN 15601

The testing procedure accredited at the Testing and Research Institute Sursee (Conformity Assessment Body NB 2118) allows the determination of the uplift resistance of installed overlapping small roofing elements such as clay or concrete roofing tiles according to EN 14437. The newly installed test stand in Sursee is also particularly suitable for the verification of high uplift resistances of roofing systems with mechanical fastening systems for storm or wind suction safety. Furthermore the Institute has a test installation which allows the inexpensive assessment of rain penetration safety on the basis of prEN 15601. This article indicates solution approaches for the development and optimization of storm-safe roof coverings.

1 Wind suction safety

1.1 Motivation

With the increase of storms and high wind loads, to a larger extent also in regions of Europe lying further away from the coast, measures for securing of roof coverings are gaining in significance. In order to effectively prevent storm damage resulting from uplift or detachment of clay or concrete roofing tiles, there is an increasing demand in various countries in Europe for storm or wind suction safety devices for steep-pitched or saddleback roofs which withstand increased loads.

The uplift resistance of a roof covering consisting of installed overlapping...
