Frost resistance of bricks – factors of influence, test methods and standards
Clay roofing tiles, clay pavers, facing bricks and clinkers have to be freeze/thaw resistant to permanently fulfil their intended structural functions. Frost damage is much-feared, because it can have dire financial consequences.
In Germany, clay roofing tiles are subject to DIN EN 539-2, whereas method E is specified. Frost damage has different causes in different parts of a roof, particularly in the case of roofs with complex shapes. Pressing textures and the firing regime are also important.
