Adolf Gottfried Tonwerke GmbH and Orcan Energy

Energy Efficiency Award 2019 for innovative waste heat utilization project

Adolf Gottfried Tonwerke GmbH and the cleantech company Orcan Energy have been presented with the Energy Efficiency Award for their innovative project for waste heat utilization in the energy-intensive extraction and refining of raw materials for the ceramics industry. They received the prestigious industry award in the category “Energy Transition 2.0”, which the German Energy Agency (dena) presented at its Energy Transition Congress in Berlin on 25 November 2019.

Adolf Gottfried Tonwerke GmbH, has specialized in extraction and processing of raw materials for the ceramics industry. With regard to climate-friendly processing, the company’s goal was to make use of the large quantities of waste heat produced during its firing of clay to chamotte. With the installation of a flue gas heat exchanger purpose-designed for this application, the company has enabled the operation of an ORC solution. This can use the high flue gas temperatures to generate electricity. The “efficiency packs” from Orcan Energy, a company that engineers solutions for the utilization of industrial waste heat, are very flexible and can react to fluctuating quantities of heat within seconds. Moreover, as a result, they achieve a high degree of efficiency in the conversion of heat into electricity even during operation at partial load. The Orcan module has a second high-temperature circuit, and in the application it can therefore utilize very high temperatures in the waste heat stream. The forecast saving with energy recycling of 180 t CO2 and 300 MWh electricity per year means a considerable reduction in the company’s electricity costs.

The jury justified its verdict as follows: “Adolf Gottfried Tonwerke GmbH in cooperation with Orcan Energy has succeeded not only in expediently tapping the waste heat from an energy-intensive firing process, but also in showing an innovative way forward for the successful utilization of dust-laden flue gases.
